HB (Only) Oval Platter with Breton Couple and À La Touche Floral Border
Quimper pottery

The central motif of this early Quimper platter features a  petit breton leaning on his walking stick and a petite bretonne holding a small bouquet of red flowers. Both wear the traditional costume that was worn in Quimper.
Quimper pottery
He cuts a dashing figure with his wavy dark hair, while her hair is hidden behind her pristine white coiffe. His blue jacket and red culottes go perfectly with her blue blouse and red skirt.
Quimper pottery
The yellow glaze of the petit breton's gaiters is bright, but the yellow of the à la touche floral border is softer. This is not a case of the platter being so old it faded...ceramics don't fade over time, the colors remain the same as when a piece first comes out of the kiln.

So why the different tones?  It does have something to do with age...but the age of the technique and equipment used to produce the piece rather than the age of the piece itself. When it was made...circa 1900...the kilns were heated...some with coal and some with wood...but still without a means to strictly regulate and maintain the temperature. In this case, the reason the yellow on the edges of the platter is lighter is because the edges experienced a different temperature than the center. Perhaps the fire flared and the yellow on the edge lightened in response to the increased heat. The result is a great piece of  old Quimper !
Quimper pottery
It measures 13.25 inches wide by 10.125 inches high and is in excellent condition. The reverse of the platter has the marks left by the pernettes...small stands used to keep pieces which are still wet with glaze from adhering to the floor of the kiln, there are some slight rubs to the glaze on the very edge and a chip on the back side at 3 o'clock that does not show from the front.
Quimper pottery
The back has an impressed number 18 and it is marked on the front under the central motif with the HB mark that identified the Grande Maison...de la Hubaudière pottery.
HB (only) oval platter with Breton couple and à la touche floral border is $ 165. US plus $ 40. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 205. US.

Porquier-Beau Dentelé Plate with Pont-l'Abbé Central Motif
Quimper pottery
The central motif on this deeply-scalloped piece depicts a charming scene of a woman dressed in the traditional costume worn in the region of Pont-l'Abbé teaching her young child to sow seed. The motif is in the Quimper faïencerie archives where it is identified as planche number 6 of the scènes bretonnes created by Alfred Beau for the Porquier pottery in the last quarter of the 19th century.
Quimper pottery
The artistry is excellent...the motif is beautifully-detailed with the farm cottages in the background and shaded folds in the petite bretonne's cobalt blue outfit.
Quimper pottery
A green and yellow-gold border follows the deeply-scalloped form that is identified in Porquier pottery documents as a coupe polylobé. The crest of Brittany with rows of black stylized ermine tails on a white field highlights the uppermost of the eight shaped indentations.
Picture
The back has the typical marks left by the pontils used to keep pieces from adhering to the floor of the kiln...
Quimper pottery
...and is signed with the title of the scene in an elegant script along with the early entwined P and B mark that was used from the mid-1870s to 1893.
Quimper pottery
It measures 8.5 inches in diameter; condition-wise...just some small chips to the back edges that are not visible from the front and a glaze bubble on the top edge above the crest. Overall...excellent condition !
Sorry...Porquier-Beau dentelé plate with Pont-l'Abbé central motif is sold.
Matched Pair of HR Quimper Figural Candlesticks...Circa 1910
Quimper pottery
A matched pair of figural candlesticks...a Bretonne and a Breton...each holding a Quimper faïence cache-pot that serves as the receptacle for a candle.
What a good-looking couple:  She wears a green blouse with a cobalt blue skirt and a pink apron. Circa 1910, it's extremely rare to find an early matched pair of this form...the modelling is so crisp, you can see the pockets in her apron !
Quimper pottery
The handsome blond Breton wears a green jacket accented with a cobalt blue gilet...vest...and snazzy golden yellow bragou-braz...culottes. He leans on his trusty walking stick while he steadies the Quimper faïence cache-pot on his head. He has a couple of nibbles on the base, but otherwise, at over 100 years old, he is in fantastic shape...
His mate has lived a more "adventurous" life...
Picture
...having been broken and unprofessionally restored along the way. She suffered a broken arm and wrist, decapitation as well as breaks in her skirt and base !
But in spite of all that, she's still  a fine young Bretonne ready to join her mate in holding  candles for your festive table.
Signed on the bottom HR Quimper by the artist number 8...
Quimper pottery
They measures 8.125 inches high; he is 3.125 inches wide, she is 2.875 inches wide, he is 2.75 inches deep and she is 2.675 inches deep.
Quimper pottery

Matched Pair of Henriot Quimper Vases with Art-Déco Handles
Quimper pottery
With their Art Déco influenced handles, this matched pair of vases...painted by the same artist and always intended to be together...put a modern spin on traditional Quimper forms. They measure an impressive 12.125 inches high by 8.25 inches wide.
A petit breton wearing the traditional costume worn in the Pont-l'Abbé region is artfully painted on one vase...
Quimper pottery
...he stands in his "Sunday Best" with one hand in his pocket and the other holding a cup...probably of cider.
Quimper pottery
On the other vase, his lovely mate also has one hand in a pocket, but she holds on to her trusty market basket with the other. Both vases have the central motifs flanked by matching sprays of plants emblematic of Brittany...pink heather...called brug in the Breton language...and golden broom...known as lann.
Green top and bottom rims provide a splash of color, the dramatic blue-sponged handles lead to a frieze of blue arabesques that encircle the top and golden-yellow stripes are accented with a carefully applied deep-blue loop and dot motif.
Quimper pottery
The other side of each vase is equally as decorative...
The breton vase has the ducal crest of the town of Quimper and a sprig of heather, while the bretonne vase has the ducal crown of Brittany and a sprig of broom.
They date from circa 1930 and are in overall excellent condition; some slight crackle to the surface glaze on both and the bretonne has had a small restoration to the bottom rim that doesn't affect its appearance.
Matched pair of Henriot Quimper vases with Art Déco handles is $ 295. US plus $ 50. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 345. US.

Quimper Faïence Secouette à Tabac
Small and uniquely different, Quimper secouettes are fun to collect, They were used by both men and women and were traditionally given as a token of affection or remembrance and often were used to commemorate an engagement to marry. Because of this, they remained cherished objects of daily life in Brittany. What's the difference between a tabatière and a secouette  à tabac?  A  tabatiere is generally a box with a cover that lifts to allow access to pinch a bit of the processed tobacco. The secouette is a closed receptacle. It was carried with you throughout the day and reminded you of the loved one who gave it to you each and every time you used it. The content comes out of the opening by shaking the receptacle into the palm of your hand so that the snuff can then be pinched between the thumb and the index finger. The term secouette comes from the French word for " to shake"...secouer.
They come in an array of shapes and sizes including :
Heart-shaped Secouette...Petit Breton and Fleur de Lys
Quimper pottery
The quintessential shape for a love token...a heart-shaped secouette !
Quimper pottery
A debonair petit breton adorns one side...looking like a real rascal in his colorful red culottes.
Turn it over to the other side...
Quimper pottery
...and there's a large fleur de lys in the colors that represent desire and enthusiasm...
Quimper pottery
Unsigned, the form was first used by the Porquier pottery, but we have seen examples of heart secouettes signed by the HB factory, so while he certainly looks to be a Porquier petit breton...exactly which Quimper pottery cannot be said positively.  Late 19th century-very early 20th century, condition is excellent...
Quimper pottery
No chips, cracks or dings.. rubbing to the glaze around the opening and as you can see in the photos, there are some glaze pops here and there and one area of thin glaze to the left of the petit breton. All normal for this era of production. It measures a generous 2.875 inches high, 2.375 inches wide and 1.375 inches deep.
Heart-shaped secouette...petit breton and fleur de lys is $150.US plus $25. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $175.US.

Desvres...Géo Martel Fantasy Faïence Venetian Gondola
Desvres pottery
From 1900 to 1922, Georges Martel had a faïencerie in Desvres specializing in decorative novelty items that were celebrated far and wide for their quality and originality.  The pottery would later move to a nearby location and continued in business for many years. This is an early example, dating from circa 1910.
Desvres pottery
Quite a fantasy gondola, it has all the hallmarks of an imaginative Martel piece. Fanciful fo sure, because since 1562, the law in Venice restricts gondolas to be painted black, black and only black and this piece is anything but black !
Picture
It measures 20 inches wide, 5.25 inches high and 3.25 inches deep. Not every Venetian gondola had a cabin...known as a feize. Intended to provide privacy to its occupants, some of the cabins originally had canvas covers to form a roof and louvered openings for ventilation...the origin of the term "venetian blinds".
Desvres pottery
With so many of Martel's pieces being decorative rather than utilitarian, it's hard to know for sure if this was intended to be used as a serving piece or stand on its own as a center piece decoration. The feize may have had a lid at one point; we've never seen the form before...even in the Desvres faience museum.
From the dragon tip to the floral-motif tail...
Desvres pottery
...with panels of scrolling foliage in between...
...and topped with a flower-bedecked feize...it's definitely a conversation piece !
Appearance is excellent...there are some original glaze skips on the edges and some small painted-in spots on the tips and on one side of the cabin.
Desvres pottery
The bottom of the gondola is unglazed and has the Géo Martel entwined G and M mark painted in manganese along with numbers for the form and artist.
Desvres...Géo Martel...fantasy faïence Venetian gondola is $ 145. US plus $ 40. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $185. US.

HR Quimper Assiette Pliée...Folded Plate...with Petite Bretonne
Quimper pottery
Looking out from the center of the blue-sponged folded border of this 9 inch plate...
Picture
...a particularly lovely petite bretonne strikes an unusual pose and coyly gazes over her shoulder. Appearance is excellent despite a very faint hairline coming from the edge at 10 o'clock.
Quimper pottery
The folded sections were hand-formed following the style of the era...circa 1900...a time when Japanese aesthetics reigned.  The border of the plate has some unglazed spots to the very edges and within the décor there are the typical glaze pops of the era. But this goes unnoticed...overshadowed by the golden-yellow stripe and floral sprays...all the colors of early Quimper perform in harmony...manganese for the brownish-black, cobalt for the blue, antimony for the yellow, copper for the green and iron oxides for the red. The glazes are particularly luminous on this piece.
Quimper pottery
On the back, there is a small chip at 11 o'clock that does not show from the front.
Quimper pottery
HR Quimper assiette pliée...folded plate...with petite bretonne is $ 185. US plus $ 35. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 220. US.

HB Quimper Plate with "Little Bo Peep" Motif on a Yellow Background
Quimper pottery
This unusual plate was part of a series commissioned in the 1930s by a specific retailer. The design appears among HB pottery documentation of motifs exclusively reserved for the ceramics departments of various high-end department stores. ( Both HB and Henriot produced limited special editions for stores such as Lord & Taylor and Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and Printemps and Galeries Lafayette in Paris ).
Quimper pottery
This motif is obviously for the French market as Little Bo Peep is depicted with a highly-evolved flare for fashion and make-up ! The plate measures 9.375 inches in diameter and is in perfect condition with just a few glaze skips and pops that are typical of this era of production.
Quimper pottery
Both in the documentation and on the markings of the piece, there is no indication of which store it was made for, but beyond the motif itself, there are further clues to substantiate it being intended for the French market: the yellow background glaze is a different tone...softer...than the typical yellow glaze used for pieces made for non-French customers...
Quimper pottery
...and the mark on the back does not include the word "France"...required for exported goods beginning in the 1880s and 1890s depending upon the country.
HB Quimper plate with "Little Bo Peep" motif on a yellow background is $ 185. US plus $ 35. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 220. US.

Mid-19th Century Cul-Noir Lightly Scalloped Oval Platter
Quimper pottery
Dating from circa 1860, this graceful, slightly scalloped oval platter has a blue sponged border framed within manganese stripes and a central motif of à la touche flowers in tin-glazed faïence on the front side, while the reverse is covered in a solid manganese glaze.
Quimper pottery
Pieces with the manganese glaze on the back were colloquially known as cul-noir or black bottom.  Developed as a way to minimize the use of more expensive glaze colors and to enhance the durability of faïence intended for everyday use, the origin of this process is attributed to Paul Caussy of Rouen. His son, Pierre-Paul Caussy, married into the family that owned the original Quimper pottery and through him, this technique...and others...came to be used in Quimper.
Picture
Because the platter...which works equally as well displayed horizontally...is unsigned, its origin can't be positively determined.  Other potteries also produced this type of ware...including Forges, a town about 35 miles northeast of Rouen...now called Forges-les-Eaux . The colors on this platter, especially the green, point more toward a Quimper attribution, but the form is not exclusive to Quimper, so being unsigned, it's safer to remain "manufacture undetermined", but definitely a superb example of vintage French faïence.
Quimper pottery
It's a substantial piece, weighing over 2 pounds and measuring 13.375 inches by 9.875 inches. It has weathered its 150 + years extremely well...with some bits of kiln dust and crackling in the center area and some rough areas along the edges.
Mid-19th century lightly scalloped oval platter is $ 125 .US plus $ 40. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 165. US.

HR Quimper Dragon-handled Jardinière with Unusual Dance Scene
Quimper pottery
Even before the advent of "Dancing with the Stars", being the best dancer in the village was considered a great honor in Brittany and this handsome blond Breton is certainly hoping to be a contender.
Quimper pottery
He's exhibiting some pretty fancy footwork and obviously not holding back, but giving it his all...while his partner, a lovely brunette, manages to remain composed. It's an unusual scene...first time we've seen it in all these years...and one that fits perfectly between the accenting floral sprays of golden-yellow broom and pink heather...
A spray of heather fills the raised cartouches on the base of the jardinière that is accented all around with swirls and a colorful "confetti" motif.
Quimper pottery
On the other side of the jardinière is the ducal crest of the town of Quimper held aloft by a pair of lions; this scene is also flanked by sprays of broom and heather.
Quimper pottery
One has to think hard about which side to display...perhaps alternating them would be a solution...because the lions sticking out their tongues are every bit as compelling as the Breton "Fred Astaire".
All this on a jardinière that has scrolls, swirls and shells, not to mention handles formed by not so ferocious dragons...
Quimper pottery
It dates from circa 1915 and as noted in the photographs, there are some small bits of loss to the glaze here and there...on both dragons as well as on the base.
The piece "rings true" despite there being a faint hairline coming from the edge on each side of the center scroll above the dancers. They are so faint as to be only visible upon a very close inspection.
The jardinière measures 14.5 inches wide, 7.375 inches high and 5.5 inches deep and is marked both within the background of the dancers...
Quimper pottery
...and on the bottom...
Quimper pottery
Sorry...HR Quimper dragon-handled jardinière with unusual dance scene is sold.
Lachenal Strawberry Motif Plate...Painted by Georges Jaéglé.
Lachenal Plate Georges Jaéglé
From the pottery atelier of Jean-Jacques Lachenal, a dramatic plate with handpainted stylized strawberries in a cobalt blue and cream palette.
In the realm of French art pottery, the name Lachenal stands out as one of the greats. A veritable ceramics dynasty, it began with Edouard Lachenal ( 1855-1948 )...who was called Edmund. Edmund trained and worked for ten years with another important French ceramist, Théodore Deck, before marrying a petite bretonne from the village of Guingamp and opening his own ceramics studio southwest of Paris in the town of Châtillon. Edmund in turn trained a number of ceramists who would become well-known, including his two sons, Raoul ( 1885-1956 ) and Jean-Jacques (1881-1945 ). In 1911, Edmund decided to devote his creative energy to the dramatic arts and Jean-Jacques took over the studio specializing in upscale table services.
Jean-Jacques Lachenal
Each piece was hand-painted and unique. This plate features a strawberry plant and was painted by Georges Jaéglé, an artist born in 1885. Jaéglé worked with both Raoul and Jean-Jacques around ten years before opening his own art pottery studio in Brétigny-sur-Orge...south of Paris.
Lachenal Plate
The work history of Georges Jaéglé allows for dating this plate as having been made circa 1915.
Measuring 8.875 inches in diameter, there are some pops to the glaze and skips along the edges as well as some blued-in areas within the central motif...but nothing to  detract from its uniqueness.
Lachenal strawberry motif plate...painted by Georges Jaéglé is $ 245 .US plus $ 30. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 275. US.

Fouillen Pêcheur Series Bannette...La Rentrée des Barques
Quimper pottery
Paul Fouillen's pêcheur series pieces are always exciting, but this one...a bannette with a striking border around the central scene...is positively superb !
The central scene...
Quimper pottery
...is entitled la rentrée des barques and depicts two bretonnes as they await "the return of the sardine boats".
Quimper pottery
The colorful border combines stylized coral motifs with croisilléd panels...
Quimper pottery
...that accent the unusual bannette form with its golden-yellow striped handles. It measures 11.75 inches wide across the handles, 10 inches top to bottom and diagonally measures 12.125 inches.
Condition-wise: some glaze skips to the edge that are typical to when it was made circa 1925 and a couple of very small chips to the back edge that don't show from the front and one blued-in spot at 1pm on the front edge. It is signed on the bottom...
...HB Quimper with X - . . to identify the artist.
Fouillen pêcheur series bannette...la rentrée des barques is $ 345 .US plus $ 35. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $380. US.

Classic Pair of HR Quimper Festonnée-Form Plates
Quimper pottery
A pair of early Quimper faïence plates at its most iconic incarnation ! The petit breton strikes a classic pose holding his pipe and his mate is equally classic holding a bouquet of red flowers.
They measure 9.375 inches in diameter with a festonnée form accented with a cobalt-blue stripe on the edge.
Quimper pottery
The border is painted with a sprinkling of floral sprigs and a four-blue-dot pattern.
...and the peasants are surrounded by flowers; the clear, bright colors on this pair of plates are noteworthy !
Quimper pottery
They date from circa 1915 and are in good condition...kiln dust here and there and marks left from the pontils are expected for this era of production.
Quimper pottery
"The petite bretonne plate has a faint hairline at 2 o'clock that does not distract...in fact, it's so faint, the plate still passes the "tap test" with a song !
Both are signed HR Quimper within the central motif.
Classic pair of HR Quimper festonnée-form plates is $ 125. US plus $ 45. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 170. US.

HB Quimper Plate...Les Provinces Françaises...Tambourinaire Representing Provence
Quimper pottery
In the 1920s, the HB pottery...then using the name Verlingue-Bolloré...introduced a series decorated with scenes representing other regions of France. The series was called Les Provinces Françaises and this 9.125 inch diameter plate is from that series...it represents the region of Provence.
Quimper pottery
The first clue is the border...the branches with golden balls denote an emblematic plant of the region...the arbousier or strawberry tree...used in southeastern France for making jam and distilled into a brandy-like liqueur.
Quimper pottery
The central motif is a dead giveaway...the tambourinaire tapping on his tambourin while blowing on a galoubet...it doesn't get more representational of the region of Provence than that !
You'll find a tambourinaire in every group of santons striving to represent Provence...the musician is an important member of the community and is easily distinguished by his elegant costume and wide brim hat.
The plate is in excellent condition...some small spots of missing glaze on the edges have been colored-in and do not affect its perfect appearance. It is signed on the back "Magali" with the # sign to indicate the artist. Magali is a common female name in Provence and is thought to be the name of the store that originally commissioned pieces from the VB-HB pottery.
HB Quimper plate...Les Provinces Francaises...tambourinaire representing Provence is $185 . US plus $35. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $220. US.

A man...perhaps better described as a country squire...poses amidst a floral accented setting on this early Quimper plate.
Quimper pottery
He wears a matching jacket and pants in a rich cobalt blue and a golden-yellow vest accented with a long double row of buttons.  His wooden shoes are protected by substantial gaiters that have even more buttons.
Quimper pottery
The lightly scalloped or festonnée plate measures 9.25 inches in diameter and has a border accented with additional flowers.
Picture
It dates from circa 1880; Condition-wise...the pernette or pontil marks on the back reveal the early pink-hued clay...
Quimper pottery
...on the front, there are a few glaze pops and spots where the background glaze didn't adhere...typical of production of this early era...and  on the edge of the plate underneath the "v" in Auvergne there is a slight hairline...so slight that the plate still "rings true". It is really only noticed if pointed out. I didn't see it at first and I bet you didn't either !
Quimper pottery
The pottery mark includes the HB for the Grande Maison and the notation Durif followed by  the abbreviation for Clermont-Ferrand. Clermont-Ferrand is the historic capital of the central France region of Auvergne, while Durif is a last name still prominent in the town. Perhaps Durif was the name of the store that commissioned this design. It's also the French term for the petite syrah variety of wine grapes...so perhaps our country squire is a vigneron out for stroll to check on his vineyard !

Picture
Each knife rest measures 3.5 inches long and is 1.25 inch across. They date from the 1930s and the Breton notation in the markings indicate that they were a special order for the first store in Quimper to sell Quimper pottery....La Civette...the recently closed enterprise run by generations of the family of Alphonse Breton.

A Quartet of Petit Bretons...Four Small Plates...5.25 Inch Diameter...AP (Arthur Porquier)
A quartet of petit bretons...hand-painted, so while at first glance they may appear to be identical quadruplets, each actually has its own characteristics...one holds a riding crop and the others have walking sticks, culotte colors include green, grey and blue, different color jackets, different thickness to border stripes, etc.
Each measures 5.25 inches in diameter; their exact use is lost in time...they date from circa 1900 and may have originally been intended to be used as a place to put one's keys and loose change...a function known as a vide-poche...literally "empty pocket".
The reddish clay of early Quimper production shows through on the unglazed foot rim and although they were not signed...not unusual in the period between 1894 and 1904...they have the unmistakable characteristics of the production of Arthur Porquier.
They are all in mint condition with normal glaze pops, skips and smudges that are typical for such early examples.
A quartet of petit bretons...four small plates...5.25 inch diameter...AP (Arthur Porquier ) is $ 140. US plus $ 35 . as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 175 . US.

Matched Pair of HB ( Only ) Pitchers
Quimper pottery
Proof positive that good things can come in small packages...these pitchers may be less than 4 inches tall, but they pack a decorative impact that belies their small stature.
Quimper pottery
A matched pair that dates from circa 1890...the fact that they were able to stay together for so long is quite a testament to their enduring appeal !
The male pitcher is painted with a traditionally-dressed petit breton strolling amidst floral sprays, a blue-striped handle and a sprinkling of the four-blue dot motif...
...his mate features a petite bretonne holding a bouquet of blue flowers amidst matching floral sprays, blue-striped handle and four-blue-dot motif.
They are both signed on the bottom HB ( only ) with a "0 "embossed to identify their size.
The pitchers were hand-formed and measure as follows: the petit breton pitcher is 3.675 inches high, 3 inches wide at the handle and 2.25 inches wide at the body. The petite bretonne is 3.75 inches high, 3.125 inches wide at the handle and 2.25 inches wide at the body. Condition is fantastic considering their age and utilitarian nature; the petit breton has a small chip on the interior of the rim and both have glaze pops and skips to the glaze on the base.

HB Quimper Petit Breton Plate with Blue Garland Border
Quimper pottery
The border on this 9.125 inch diameter plate features a glorious blue garland positioned between blue stripes...
Picture
...a close-up view shows faint golden-yellow bands that were probably originally intended to be deeper, but the heat of the kiln was not supported by the antimony...the mineral compound used to create yellow.  That was just one of the tricky aspects facing the makers of early Quimper pottery...each of the colors required different temperatures yet a piece of several colors was fired just that one time. But for this plate, the result was a success as the faintness of the yellow has the effect of further emphasizing the blue.
Quimper pottery
The petit breton provides a striking figure in his green jacket and contrasting red culottes.

HR ( Only ) Matched Pair of Plates
Quimper pottery
A wonderful matched pair of early Quimper pottery plates...

Quimper pottery
With his yellow gaiters and distinctive manganese hat, he stands between floral sprays; the border features alternating motifs of a sprig of flowers and four blue dots. Condition-wise, there is some overall crazing along with some skips, bloops and pops and two small spots that look to be restorations...on the very edge at 5pm and 7pm...but nothing distracting or that is not in keeping with their age and era of production.
The petite bretonne...

Fanciful French Faïence Artichoke Plate
French Faïence
This unusual 9.25 inch diameter plate was designed for a very specific purpose...to elegantly serve the awkward artichoke. Hybrid over time from the flowering thistle, France's love affair with edible artichokes began in earnest with the arrival of Catherine de Medici in 1547...
Picture
...and obviously endured as this plate with its Japanese-inspired naturalistic design dates from the last half of the 1800s. It's difficult to show you in a photograph, but the motif is embossed...a raised artichoke bud is on the left in the above photo...
artichoke plate
...it emerges from raised fronds that function to separate artichoke from sauce.
artichoke plate
It might be easier to visualize the raised areas of the design with this view of the back of the plate.
artichoke plate
The reds are raised as on early Quimper faïence, but it is not Quimper...exactly what it is, is a bit of a mystery. It has certain hallmarks of the faïence of eastern France, including Saint-Clément where Gallé father and son created extraordinary examples of art pottery and tablewares. The back of the plate has the pernette marks and the signature shown below.
French Faïence
The Tardy reference books show a 19th century Saint-Clement with a G,  but it is not quite the same and the plate form is not documented.  Since there are a number of "St. C..."s listed as having produced faïence during that time period...for now it will remain a mystery. But what a beautiful and intriguing mystery !  With just some typical glaze pops of the period, it is in excellent condition.

Victor Lucas-Designed Early Keraluc Bonbonnière
Quimper pottery
Regular readers know that for the most part, our preference is for Quimper pieces that were made using older, traditional technologies and equipment. This generally rules out more modern pieces...usually defined as those created after the end of Wold War II. But when a piece warrants it, exceptions are made; And this bonbonnière is one of those pieces.
Quimper pottery
The lid's motif of a colorful rooster sitting on a fence is particularly cheerful...and hopefully, he won't crow each time you lift the lid to take out a treat. Originally for sweets, it could be used to hold all sorts of things.  Measuring 5.375 inches in diameter and 2.5 inches high, it even looks good empty !
In 2019, the manoir de Kerazan included this motif as part of a special exhibit...Les animaux du ciel et de la terre ( The animals of land and sky ).
Quimper pottery
The piece was designed by Victor Lucas and is one of the earliest designs he imagined for his Keraluc pottery. Lucas, 1897-1958, is one of the five artists featured in this year's spectacular exhibition at the Musée de la Faïence.
Quimper pottery
The rooster stands on one leg amidst floral-topped branches and...paying homage to his days at both Henriot and HB...Lucas accented both the lid and the base with blue and golden-yellow stripes, adding a thin manganese band for additional panache. It's in mint condition...ready to add a delightful touch of cheerfulness !
Dating from the end of the 1940s, it is signed on the bottom of the base with the embossed, early mark of the Keraluc pottery...Made in France Keraluc près Quimper along with the number 3.
Victor Lucas-design early Keraluc bonbonnière is $ 65. US plus $ 25. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 90. US.

HR ( Only ) Assiette Pliée...Folded Plate...with Petit Breton
Quimper pottery
An arresting blend...a form with folded sides inspired by the ancient art of Japan decorated with a classic petit breton surrounded with floral sprays.
It measures 8 inches high and 7.5 inches wide and dates from 1891-1894 when anything Japanese was all the rage.
Picture
He stands ever-so-nonchalantly with one hand in the pocket of his colorful vest and the other holding his riding crop.
Condition is excellent...some skips to the glaze along the edges that are original to when it was produced. A look at the back reveals the early pink-hued clay...
Quimper pottery
...and the continuation of the blue sponged border.
It is signed with the early HR mark that was eventually challenged legally for being too similar to the previously-established HB mark. Henriot claimed that the "H" was for Henriot and the "R" for his wife, whose maiden name was Riou.
Picture
That was true, but in a 1922 court ruling, the Henriot pottery was forced to cease using "HR".

Mid-19th Century Faïence Bénitier
Quimper pottery
A mid-19th century faïence bénitier...
Bénitiers hold holy water; in churches and chapels, they are generally large basins at the entrance...but for individual households, a personal bénitier...or holy water font...was used. The priest would either bless water brought by the parishioners or the parishioners would simply dip into the existing basin. Once home, these small bénitiers were often attached to the enclosed bed...known as a lit clos.
This humorous vintage postcard shows a Breton lit clos...note the bénitier in the close-up of the photo.
The bénitier measures 6 inches high, 2.5 inches wide and 2.5 inches deep.  It is in fantastic condition. The red border has some small bits of glaze loss and there is one small bit of glaze loss to the white edging at 2 pm. The receptacle has a minute flea bite to the edge...remarkable condition for something that was used daily by the entire family.
Quimper pottery
Unsigned, the form is attributed to Quimper, but we are unable to identify which specific pottery.
The simplicity of the figure combines perfectly with the signature Quimper glaze colors and à la touche brush strokes.
Mid-19th century faïence bénitier is $ 125. US plus $20. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 150. US.

Unsigned "Mystery" Faïence Plate...Fanciful Bird with Flower Basket
Another mystery piece, but the mystery surrounding this example of antique French faïence is not its decorative appeal...instantly apparent through its subtle hints of japanesque influence...what we can't determine for sure is the plate's precise origin.
French faïen
The central motif...
Picture
...a single bird balancing on a flowering branch of chicory that is coming out of a basket set along the shore is generally attributed to La Rochelle...in the Charente-Maritime department...south of Quimper along the Atlantic coast between Nantes and Bordeaux.
But as Marjatta Taburet points out in her book La Faïence de Nevers, in the 18th century, some of the La Rochelle pottery factory founders and many a pottery worker came to La Rochelle from Nevers...bringing Nevers techniques with them. The same is true of Quimper pottery, notably with the arrival of Pierre Bellevaux in 1731.  In fact, we know that the HB pottery also produced plates with this motif as evidenced by company catalogs from the 1920s. But those were the first published catalogs, so a complete listing of the motifs produced prior to that is not available.
French Faïence
The plate is unsigned, but its gently scalloped, foot rim-less form, pernette marks and glaze quality indicate that the plate dates from the latter part of the 19th century.
Hampering the search for the answer to the precise origin of our mystery plate is the revival movement that took hold in the last half of the 19th century...when the styles and motifs of previous eras became popular once more. It was a time when potteries throughout France resurrected older designs and this motif was no exception. Certain clues allow us to eliminate some of the possibilities...for example, the quality of the glaze is not consistent with a Malicorne attribution.

So the mystery endures as well as the intrigue of this antique French faïence plate that measures  9.375 inches in diameter and is in superb condition considering its age with some chips to the edges and some typical glaze skips and pops consistent with its era of production.
Unsigned mystery faïence plate...fanciful bird with flower basket is $ 125. US plus $ 35. as a contribution towards insured shipping to a US address for a total of $ 160. US.

19th Century Rococo Cornucopia Bud Vase

Quimper pottery
...and a petite bretonne on the other.
It is unmarked...
Quimper pottery
...but 100% absolutely and positively Quimper, although the precise factory origin is difficult to attribute with certainty. That's because in the 1890s, painters often switched from factory to factory...Porquier to Henriot...Henriot to Porquier...bringing their poncifs and  painting style idiosyncrasies  with them. The Porquier pottery lists a porte-violette in their catalog, but the form isn't illustrated and Henriot didn't have a catalog back then.
But the type of clay, the colors of the glazes and the decorative motifs are not to be denied and it's a perfect example of early Quimper faïence...whether it be for holding violets, some other flower or on its own !
A charming piece in great condition considering its age...some roughness to the edges but that's normal for a piece of this era.

Quimper Quadrillage Motif Plate...Last Half of the 19th Century
Quimper pottery for sale
Dating from the last half of the 19th Century, this plate is a good example of the early days of Quimper faïence production and serves as a good illustration of the whims of a non-thermostatically-controlled kiln. Such a good example, it was featured in our book on Quimper pottery...on page 152.

Decorated with a classic early Quimper motif featuring a central daisy or marguerite and intersecting lines forming a quadrillage design, it was originally intended to have stronger reds and yellows, but the kilns were wood-fired back then and in this instance, the temperature was not maintained at the proper level for those colors to adhere to the surface.  Only light traces where they were applied remain.

Quimper faïence doesn't fade with time...it's all about the whims of the kiln when a piece was originally made !
Picture
Unsigned, guaranteed to be antique Quimper, it measures 9 inches in diameter. The back has the typical three marks from the use of pontils and some missing glaze on the top of the back edge that does not show from the front. Note the small hole at around seven o'clock of the center portion.
Quimper pottery for sale
It blends in on the front to not be noticeable, but that's a hole that was used to hang it on the wall...they didn't have commercial plate hangers in those days ! There is an old restoration on the edge at nine o'clock, but considering its age, the plate is in really remarkable condition !

Our Book...Quimper Pottery...a Guide to Origins, Styles and Values
Quimper pottery
Our book. It represents over ten years of mind-numbing research. It made my father proud and my sister jealous. This, of course, is a good thing! It was written because I'm ornery...can't be helped, it's a Celtic trait...and what was being said about Quimper pottery just did not jive with our first-hand knowledge of ceramics in general and Quimper pottery in particular. In our book, we reveal the history behind the distinctive Quimper designs and individually profile seven different Quimper pottery factories. Special focus is given to the painters and potters that created this delightful French art pottery and a virtual photo album traces its chronological development from 100 A.D. to today.

Hardbound, 224 pages, and with over 500 color photographs, it is both entertaining and informative, and was designed to truly function as a guide to Quimper pottery's origins, styles, and values.
It  will greatly enhance your enjoyment and understanding of Quimper pottery.

We are very proud of our book, but then that's to be expected. Here's a sampling of what others have had to say:
